Nougat, apart from being present in all the Spanish houses at Christmas, it is also a part of our literary tradition,...
Nougat is awesome, why deceive ourserlves. It is a fantastic and full of energy Christmas sweet, and, furthermore, it tastes superb. On the other hand, nougat unites us during those special days, sharing it around the table or eating it in secret.
No matter how you are, it is sure that every time you think of nougat, a family Christmas scene comes to mind. The thing is that, in Christmas, there is always nougat in Spanish homes.
But in Christmas we do not only have fun while eating. We also love singing "Mi Gran Noche", and "Campana sobre Campana", some typical Spanish Christmas songs. Furthermore, grandparents always try to dig up their full of references and experiences sayings.
For that reason, we bring you in this article the nougat sayings, so that nobody will outshine you in a good sayings argument.
«We begin with a saying that is very linked to the Spanish picaresque: «In the afternoon, the crumbs of the bag taste like nougat».
That is to say that when food is scarce, we resign ourselves with whatever.
Another saying links nougat with the calendar of saints' days: «With the day of Saint Anton, the nougat should be out of the drawer», or «When the day of Saint Anton comes, we run out of nougat».
Saint Anton, who is the patron saint of animals, is celebrated on January 12th, after Christmas, so it is very possible that at that time there is no nougat in our larder.
And if still remains nougat, we have just learnt thousands of ways to make the most of it using in our recipes, haven´t we?
Antoher example of a nougat saying is: «Rustic like their mountains, more flavourful than ham, all Fereño girls are richer than nougat».
These girls are from Férez, a town from Albacete, who must be very from Albacete.
After talking about sayings we move on to songs, like that one by Miliki, in which we introduced us to Susanitas's mouse, «a tiny mouse, that eats chocolate and nougat, and small anise balls».
And, althought you will forgive us for anticipating the answer, there is a riddle addressed to the youngest of the house:« With almonds and honey we eat it at Christmas, do you already know what is it?».
Finally, let's end with a well-known saying for football lovers. In this case, when we say that somebody «does not eat the nougat», means that he or she will be fired before Christmas.
